Aims of the course:
We are delighted to welcome master potter Tom Kemp to run our two-day throwing masterclass.
Porcelain is strange and wonderful. When fired it can be translucent and very tough but throwing with it can often feel frustrating; for example, not knowing how much to push it or when it might collapse. We'll look at the essential techniques for throwing porcelain which let you throw taller and with thinner walls. Correct movements, body posture, and efficient throwing all influence the results. Tom’s expert guidance will help you to increase the amount of clay which goes into the pot and reduce that needing to be trimmed away. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between you and the clay. The same techniques are transferrable to your stoneware throwing.
Tom’s pots are mainly thrown in porcelain, sometimes in parts to form larger or taller vessels. He is very generous with his knowledge and his patient observation will help you to really move you on in your skills with this medium.
N.B. At the end of the course it will be possible to take your work home as greenware (charged for by weight) or to leave a piece at Vessel Ceramics to be biscuit fired to be collected later.
ABOUT TOM:
Tom is a renowned potter and calligrapher. He works with porcelain, making large vessels and these are the surfaces on which he then writes marks usually with swift, single brushstrokes.
He is fascinated by the ancient history of writing on ceramic vessels and has definitely joined that tradition - by authoring a textbook dedicated to ancient brush script and continuing to teach workshops around the world.
He has had commissions from Nigel Slater to produce a book cover, from Notto Restaurants for murals and Gilvic Restaurant for its logo.
